(1891–1974), US Air Force officer; born Carl Andrew Spatz. He directed the US bombing force against Germany in 1944 and against Japan in 1945, including the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1947–48, he served as the first chief of staff of the newly separate US Air Force.
