(1898–1976), US singer and actor; full name Paul Bustill Robeson. The song "“Ol' Man River”" in the musical "Showboat" (1927) established his international reputation. As an actor, he was particularly identified with the title role of "Othello". His black activism and communist sympathies led to ostracism in the 1950s.
