1930s; earliest use found in The Albuquerque Journal. From Spanish rasgueado act of strumming a guitar, use as noun of past participle of rasguear to strum, to make a flourish, specifically sense development of rasguear to scrawl. The some forms reflect Spanish rasqueado (from rasquear to strum, to make a flourish, apparently alteration of rasguear).
