A Republican, he favored big business and waged the Spanish–American War of 1898, which resulted in the acquisition of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines, as well as the annexation of Hawaii, and brought the US to the forefront of world power. He was assassinated by an anarchist while in Buffalo, New York.
