Late 17th century; earliest use found in Archives of Maryland. Probably from Nanticoke; the precise form of the etymon is unknown. It is clear that almost from its earliest attested instances the word has been affected by folk etymology; in particular the third syllable has been influenced by nose, assisted by the creature's possessing a snoutlike extension.
