Late 16th century; earliest use found in William Phillip (fl. 1596–1619), translator. Partly from (i) Dutch Colles and its etymon (ii) Portuguese Coles, Colles, all plural (from Gujarati koḷī, self-designation), and partly directly (iii) from Gujarati koḷī.
