According to the Bible, Jericho was a Canaanite city destroyed by the Israelites after they crossed the River Jordan into the Promised Land. Occupied by the Israelis since the Six Day War of 1967, it was the first area given partial autonomy under the PLO–Israeli peace accord in 1994.
