Social injustice and the hardships of the Depression inspired many of his songs, including "This Land Is Your Land" (1940) and "Deportee" (1948). His son Arlo (1947–), also a folk singer and songwriter, is best known for his talking blues song "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" (1967).
