  • (1942–2011), Libyan statesman; head of state 1970–2011. After leading a coup that overthrew King Idris in 1969, he established the Libyan Arab Republic and pursued a policy of Islamic fundamentalism blended with Arab nationalism. Accused of supporting international terrorism and wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, he was deposed in August 2011. He was later captured and killed by Libyan revolutionaries.
