  • (1799–1836), US frontiersman; full name James Bowie. The Bowie knife was designed either by him or by his brother Rezin. One of the leaders among the US settlers who opposed Mexican rule in Texas, he shared command of the garrison that resisted the Mexican attack on the Alamo. He died during this battle.
