Late 17th century; earliest use found in Ralph Cudworth (1617–1688), philosopher and theologian. From Byzantine Greek αὐτοκινησία self-motion from Hellenistic Greek αὐτοκίνησις self-motion (from ancient Greek αὐτο- + κίνησις) + -ία. Compare earlier autokinetical and later autokinesis.
