Definition of affectual in US English:

  • Sociology and Psychology. Of, relating to, or characterized by feelings, emotion, or mood.

Late 15th century (in an earlier sense). From Anglo-Norman and Middle French affectuel ardent, eager and its etymon post-classical Latin affectualis concerned with or appealing to the emotions, heart-stirring from classical Latin affectus + -ālis. Apparently re-formed in 20th cent. from classical Latin affectus affect + -al. Compare earlier affectually.
