(born 1934), Nigerian playwright, novelist, and critic; full name Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka. His writing often uses satire to explore the contrast between traditional and modern society in Africa. Notable works: "The Lion and the Jewel" (1959) and "The Interpreters" (1965). In 1986 he became the first African to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
