(1779–1813), US soldier and explorer; full name Zebulon Montgomery Pike. He led several expeditions into the Louisiana Purchase region, where he came upon (but never climbed) what is now called Pike's Peak in Colorado. He was killed at York (now Toronto) in Ontario, Canada, while leading a charge against the British during the War of 1812.
