  • (1879–1968), German chemist, pioneer of nuclear fission. Together with Lise Meitner, he discovered the element protactinium in 1917. The pair discovered nuclear fission in 1938 with Fritz Strassmann(1902–80). Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1944), shared with Strassmann.
