She wrote The Feminine Mystique (1963), which presented femininity as an artificial construct and traced the ways in which US women are socialized to become mothers and housewives. In 1966, she founded the National Organization for Women, serving as its president until 1970. Other works: The Second Stage (1981) and The Fountain of Age (1993).
