Treated as plural. A division of protists characterized by extensible pseudopodia, usually comprising the amoebas, foraminiferans, actinopods, and related forms; (also in form sarcodina) organisms of this division (collectively or individually).
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science. From scientific Latin Sarcodina (R. Hertwig & E. Lesser 1874, in 10 (Supplementsheft) 43), apparently from Sarcoda + -ina.
