Origin

1950s. Either from Saldanha, the name of a town in the Western Cape Province, South Africa, near to where the fossils were discovered in 1953, or from SaldanhaBay, the name of a large natural harbour after which the town was named (although the finds were not made in the immediate vicinity of the coast).
