Late 17th century. From Spanish rejón lance, spear from rejo spike, pin (1462; compare regional (Leon or Aragon) reyllo bar (of gold); masculine form formed on the same base as reja ploughshare from classical Latin rēgula rule, rod, bar: see regula) + -ón.
