Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Kingsley (1819–1875), novelist, Church of England clergyman, and controversialist. From French Quartier Latin Latin Quarter, so called because the district was the site of the university of Paris with its community of Latin-speaking scholars from quartier + latin.
