Late 15th century. Apparently from Middle French grant gorre, grand gaurre syphilis from grand + gorre syphilis, of uncertain origin, perhaps related to a number of terms denoting pigs (and occasionally other farm animals) in French regional use (probably originally imitative of the cry of a pig).
