Late Middle English; earliest use found in John Gower (d. 1408), poet. Originally from Middle French accusement, acusement from accuser + -ment. Compare post-classical Latin accusamentum accusation, Old Occitan acuzamen. In recent use probably independently re-formed from accuse + -ment.
