The action of accroach; usurpation.
Late Middle English. Probably partly from Anglo-Norman acrochement, accrochement usurpation, encroachment and partly from accroach + -ment. Compare post-classical Latin accrochiamentum, Middle French, French accrochement delay of a case, illicit gain (both 1480), act of accroaching.
