  • (1788–1850), British Conservative statesman, prime minister 1834–5 and 1841–6. As Home Secretary (1828–30) he established the Metropolitan Police (hence the nicknames bobby and peeler). His repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 split the Conservatives and forced his resignation.
