  • (1941–2006), Serbian politician, president of Serbia 1989–97 and of Yugoslavia 1997–2000. His nationalist policies accelerated the break-up of Yugoslavia and led to war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Kosovo. He was extradited to face war crimes charges at a UN tribunal in The Hague, but died before the trial ended.
